> ACCESSING ARCHIVAL DATA...

Here lies Google+, the social network nobody joined but everybody had, thanks to a company-wide mandate that quietly bolted a profile onto every YouTube comment, every Gmail contact, and every unsuspecting Android user.

Circles let you sort your friends into elaborate Venn diagrams nobody asked for. Hangouts was actually good, so naturally it got spun off and slowly dismantled. Meanwhile the “ghost town” jokes wrote themselves — engagement metrics consisted mostly of tech bloggers reviewing tech blogger posts about how empty Google+ was.

The end arrived not with a bang but a bug report: a 2018 API flaw exposed private profile data for hundreds of thousands of users, and Google, perhaps relieved to finally have a reason, announced the consumer version’s shutdown within the year. The Circles closed for good.

“This isn’t a social network. It’s a social layer across all of Google.”
